Monday afternoon, late September and my tautly-stretched belly commanded my attention. Should I go to the hospital (was this the real thing?) or to the doctor’s office? I phoned the baby’s future grandma; we decided on the doctor’s office.
Wrong choice!
We arrived and my water broke. My doctor asked why I hadn’t just gone straight to the hospital? I didn’t know. This was my first baby! He ordered a wheelchair for the short trek to the hospital where I would await the stork’s arrival. 😉
Fast forward to 5 hours (and a fairly easy labor and delivery!) later. I was on cloud 9 and nothing mattered or even existed outside that cozy hospital room! It seemed as though the hands on the clock had frozen in time as Rick and I met our new, fresh, soft-as-silk miracle. Can you relate?
Today, I am honored to introduce my first baby, Lacey Lynn. If you are a mom, do you remember how you felt when your first bebe entered the world?
My blonde baby?
We had chosen her name and, since I was a blonde, I pictured that my baby would be blonde also. But on that magical Monday evening, I was enthralled to welcome a perfect, 6 1/2-pound baby girl with a profusion of dark hair. She did not resemble the Lacey I had imagined! I had to rethink that name, but I’m glad we kept it because it fits her perfectly. Skip ahead a few years….
Lacey, now 31, married Dave (almost 10 years ago) and is diligently working on her 2nd Masters degree. Her first degree is in Biology with an emphasis in Lichens, and this one will be in Geography/Geology. She has always loved to dig in the dirt looking for or planting “treasure” for someone else to find, as well as to collect rocks so this degree is right up her alley! 😛
I’m so proud of her for earning a “full ride” scholarship to UNO and for keeping a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and college.
Speaking of lichens, I didn’t know anything about them before she got her first degree, but there are many different types, shapes, and colors of lichens to awe and amaze you! Lichens are a combination of fungi and algae and are pretty cool. You probably don’t even realize how many are all around you.
Creating beautiful flower arrangements, cooking and baking–especially cheesecake and challah (bread), and making jewelry are some of Lacey’s passions.
She has always been fascinated with trains. It’s probably because when she was young, she received a miniature train that blew “real” smoke out of its smokestack.
Once when we visited Lauritzen Gardens, she even got to play “engineer” and put a small-scale engine on the track.
Being a connoisseur of coffee and espresso, she, along with Dave, enjoys their commercial-type espresso machine daily.
As the oldest by almost 4 years, Lacey enjoyed plenty of time alone with Rick and me. I loved to teach her to pronounce difficult words. She could communicate well; it was as if we were speaking to a little adult.
As I shared in my posts about Chelsea and Calie, I kept a notebook of some of the funny and sweet things my kiddos said when they were little. Here are some of Lacey’s best.
Lacey had just gotten in trouble for not minding. I was trying to explain to her that if she would mind then she wouldn’t get in trouble. She was mad. As I was explaining I called her “sweetie.” She said, “Don’t call me sweetie, honey bun, sugar plum, Punk (her nickname), Lacey, or Lacey Lynn. Just call me Jacobsen.” Age 4 3/4
We were talking about growing a garden and Lacey said she would plant frozen corn and pork n’ beans in hers. Age 3 1/2
She and I were out for a walk. Lacey, 4 1/2, was running and she said, “It sure is fun to run when you don’t get runned over.”
Her Aunt Tricia asked her where her “little blankie” was and Lacey replied, “He’s on vacation for 5 weeks. He’s going to Canada and to get me a liberty bell without a crack in it.” She was almost 4. This is definitely one of my favorites. She had QUITE the imagination!
I had made peach crisp, and I asked Lacey if she liked it. She said, “I don’t like your crisp, but I like your peach.”
Doesn’t seem possible that it’s been 31 years since my first “cloud 9” experience of having a tiny human being to love and care for. It’s been a fun, exasperating, and love-filled journey so far. I’m blessed and proud to be her mother. ♥
Enjoy your miracle(s) today! Talk with you soon.
Blessings and blooms,
Pam

Wow that was a wonderful tribute! I am truly grateful for having Lacey in my life (even sporadically) everyone who knows her has a little bit brighter point in their life!
How kind of you to say! Thank you.
